This scrubber is perfect for deep cleaning grill grates when attempting to wash away layers of burnt residue with soap and water. This is not a replacement for the grill scrubber that can be used to clean the grates just before adding food. This scrubber sheds a lot of material when you clean it and the grates should be rinsed and washed thoroughly after use before coming into contact with food. This scrubber tackles the most stubborn dirt and charred coating much better than a steel wool pad. I tried the steel wool pad first, and it ripped on my dirty bars in a minute. I still had to use a lot of detergent with this block, but not as much as without it. The block quickly took on the shape of the grooves in my grille. By the time I cleaned the two iron bars about 1/4 of the block was probably gone and in a heap in my sink. I will probably get about 2 more uses of this block before it becomes too small to be practical based on this experience.
