It's simple - each unit has a machined male thread on one end and a mating female thread on the other and they are all strung on a necklace like beads on a cord. It's a simple idea, but beautifully executed. The threads are all clean and precise, they appear to be well hardened so the threads won't snag when trying different nuts and bolts, and the size is clearly marked on each node so they never wear out. I bought the metric and SAE sets a few months ago and they are already very comfortable for me. Using them is the quickest, easiest, and most reliable way I've found to identify "mysterious" threads.
