This is definitely an improvement over my grandmother's cast iron skillet. I still have my grandmother's cast iron skillet. It must be over 50 years old. I knew if I was going to buy another set I definitely wanted one made of cast iron. What I really love about this set is that my grandma's 50 year old pan has some upgraded features. Yes, it still has all the classic qualities. They are all as heavy and hard as my grandmothers. They have spouts for draining and pouring, like a grandma. And they have a second handle opposite the large protruding handle to help you lift and balance. The difference is that it has silicon bushings for a big grip. The silicone case is great. I don't have to worry about it burning if put in the oven or near a flame. I can also take it off to wash or when I don't want to use it. They just slide open so I can use them on Lou with a slippery nail. I also like tempered glass lids. There is one for every pot size. They fit there perfectly and have a nice stainless steel rim. They have a silicone handle. And just like other silicones that are made into cast iron, this handle is also able to withstand heat. And finally, I love the fact that it comes with a care guide. I intend to keep this grooming guide as the skills will likely be passed on to someone in my family one day. And I forgot to mention that the skills are pre-mature. How great! This is half the battle and learning to handle cast iron. The work and time required to season the pan is completely eliminated. You can take them out of the packaging and use them immediately. Fiction!
