Bad for Smash - Terrible Joystick Controls

This controller looks great. I will give What you don't see in the picture is that the handles have a really weird grip texture. It feels like you're holding grainy paper. The rest of the controller is as smooth as a classic Gamecube controller. I'd like to see the same on the handles, but it's not uncomfortable. The sticks click correctly, the buttons all work pretty well, but I can't change the function of the ZR and ZL buttons, so it's annoying but tolerable. The turbo button (which really shouldn't be!) is in the middle so if you're used to the Gamecube controller have fun with that because I accidentally pressed it a couple of times - luckily it doesn't do anything on your own, you have to use it together with another button but still. My main complaint, however, comes from a faulty analog stick. This seems to work fine at first, until you realize that when you hold and release the stick in one direction, it sometimes registers as input in the opposite direction! This is incredibly important in games like Smash Bros. If your character turns unexpectedly, you can miss a hold or attack and leave yourself wide open. Too bad this controller doesn't work well for the game I actually bought it for as the design is really nice. I could just return it and get one of the PowerA controllers instead as I really need a GC controller with all the extra buttons to make it a viable alternative to a professional controller. [EDIT] After verifying that I didn't have a bad input or something, I went ahead and checked the joystick calibration. It's disgusting. Careful circling is not possible due to the design, only straight up/down/left/right work correctly. On both the C Stick and the Analog Stick, this issue, as well as the incorrect input issue mentioned above, is a serious problem. I've attached a video demonstrating both calibrations. You can see him jumping to the opposite entrance from time to time. Even for a third-party controller, the quality should never be that low. Also, I still can't get the "Hold shoulder while connecting" buttons to work. It's a bad design decision and isn't mentioned anywhere! I had to find a random YouTube reviewer to mention this as they decided to swap out the triggers for some reason instead of just having a switch or something.

Pros
  • Shoulder Switch Function Switch
Cons
  • Power Socket Required
