Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Performance Brake Pads with Shims and Hardware - StopTech 309.11490 by John Barnett

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Stop Tech Street Performance brake pads need a new name.

A small background. I bought these pads for the front of my 2007 WRX. I've had Centric (parent company of Stoptech) silent pads on the front of the same machine and wasn't happy with their bite. Standard pads were better than silent pads. On Stop Tech Street Performance pads. I installed these (front) along with Centric Premium rotors on my 2007 WRX. I'm good at pounding pads. They replied immediately and were very nice. The rubbers were quiet and had a good initial bite. They created a puff of dust, the wheels turned black in a week. Expected for aggressive rubbers. The pads stayed still and never went away. After 6 months of use (2500 miles) the front brakes showed signs of brake chatter. Pulsing brake pedal and steering wheel shaking when braking. I've tried warming up the pads aggressively as that sometimes solves the problem. This didn't solve my problem. I had my local independent Subaru shop cut the rotors and regrind the pads. The car is again in excellent condition, the front brakes are like new. 3 months later the front brakes started twitching again. I tried the same reburial routines, but the brakes gradually got worse. It was the worst shaking I've ever experienced from a brake. I called the dealer where I bought the pads and rotors. They suggested I use a less aggressive pad. They said the StopTech pads require aggressive riding to avoid shaking. I was almost certain that I had been driving the car hard enough for long enough. I had no trouble removing clumps. I bought a new set of pads (Hawk HPS) along with Napa premium rotors (warranty). I think Stop Tech shouldn't sell them as outdoor pads when they need a constant state of full boil to stay happy. Driving on the road is not always conducive to braking at high speed. I think these pads are more suitable for autocross competitions than everyday driving.
