One of the best things about this laptop stand is the variety of options. You can use it in many different ways. For example, if you are working on uneven ground, you can set one side higher than the other. The fan works fine. It plugs into your laptop's USB port and has an on/off switch. The only downside: when it is switched on, it not only cools the laptop, but also the legs. So it can be great in the summer but not so good in the winter depending on how temperature sensitive you are. I had no problem using the table without the fan on. Note that this is all 24 inches wide (not counting the extra mouse tray, which I don't use) so you'll need that much free space to use it. I do most of the work in a very wide chair, but I'm not sure if it fits in a regular sized chair.
