Review on Tekonsha 118242 Harness Wiring Package by Jonny Dogruyol

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great product, had issues with some other things I had to use.

My car: 2000 F-150. Standard cab, 8ft bed, factory 4 pin plug. Never towed but my factory 4 pin connector is corroded from time and so completely. And switching to a 7-pin connector seemed like a good way to go. (Although my mission is to pull a U trailer that only takes 4 pins.) And it seemed like a MUCH better solution to upgrade. The instructions (which I read on the ReeseProd website BEFORE I ordered) were very clear and simple. I had to fit some components that Ford had left out of my accessory box. There were 2 fuses and 2 relays. 2 fuses did not fit my car. But then I didn't need backups. (Ford put everything I needed in it.) Maybe fuses are the right fuses for cars that really need them. I really needed 2 relays and they were the right relays. The physical connection of the wiring harness required work to get to the connector. (Like lowering the spare tire.) But once I managed to do it, it probably took less than 5 minutes. The actual trailer connector does not include a bracket. If you want to use Reese's mounting solution (which I thought is the best) you will need two parts: Tow Ready 20212 Mounting Bracket for 7-Way OEM Connector - This is the bracket that the connector screws onto. (Don't order ready-to-tow replacement 118138. Not suitable.) The 118136 ready-to-tow replacement attaches to the (preferably square) tube of your hitch (with the hose clamp provided) and over the bracket. To be honest, I don't really like this attachment method. It seems very thin to me. But there will be no mechanical loads on it. (Not including the trailer wiring.) (Hence only four stars, assembly method. The part listed here was great.) I spent about three hours trying to fix the wiring problem. When I connected the tester to my newly established connection, I found that my turn signals and parking lights worked separately. But when I turned on the parking lights, both turn signal/brake lights stopped working. But it turns out BOTH the testers I used, the Hopkins 47345 4-Wire Flat Adapter and the Hopkins product that LOOKS WHAT this Hopkins 48675 4-Wire Flat LED Dust Cover looks like, but I notice that they make others that look like the same thing (i bought testers from a local pep boys store) actually had the same defect: turn on the parking lights and the turn signal leds stop working. Both my voltmeter and real light bulbs confirm that my plug is working properly.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions
