I have made several batches of jerky. Two batches were marinated sliced beef and another two batches were ground beef. One of those batches of ground beef was made using the medicine and spices that came with the dehydrator, and it tasted just like Slim Jim. Another batch of ground beef used a homemade marinade. I used a meat thermometer and noticed that the bottom shelf heats up to 145 F during batch cooking. from minced meat. I bought two extra trays and am happy with the results considering how cheap it was. Not as pretty or expensive as a dehydrator that lets you regulate the temperature, but it works. I found five hours to be perfect for ground beef.
