Sometimes you buy a product with certain expectations, and most of the time they don't even come close. This yarn winder met all my expectations and more. I've wanted one for a long time but all the reviews I've read about them say they break or don't do their job well. This one has been used a lot, like 200+ skeins and it still works. It takes a little getting used to, I mean like all things, the more you use it the more tricks you learn about it. With the supplied tensioning levers you can wind the thread in such a way that This will make the yarn cake spongy and soft and won't hold its shape like store-bought cakes. I've learned that I can better control the tension by running the yarn through my hand before it goes through the tension arms on the bobbin, which makes the strands stronger and allows more yarn to be wound onto the bobbin. The yarn cake will then be firmer, like the ones you find in the store. I wish it had an interchangeable spool for smaller thread/yarn like those used for lace. The spool is too big leaving a huge hole in the middle and as soon as you take the yarn/thread it loses its shape and collapses but that only happens with the yarn/thread. I also found that if you press on the cake as it comes off the winder, it is compressed into a slightly shorter and firmer cake than to avoid pressing it onto the table with your hands. Overall, I am very happy that the winder likes to use it. Not only is my yarn stash more organized and taking up less space now, I get a good arm workout lol. I believe speed is important too, the slower you go the better the form and the faster you go the muddy and spongy it gets.
