Most electronic calipers I've used have an absolute encoder, which means you can turn the display off and on again at any time position along the line and the displayed value do not change. The encoder on this caliper model is incremental. That means that if you turn it off, or it turns itself off to save battery (a great feature, btw), it won't remember its location. If I were a person who used calipers all day/every day then I would probably definitely get one with absolute positioning. As a casual user (an engineer who uses it occasionally to measure parts and make drawings of them), this is certainly sufficient for my needs. If you lose the reading due to a power failure, you can simply reset the caliper and measure again. A little annoying for me, but not a big deal since I don't measure constantly all day. Overall though, I really like it and would recommend it for most users as long as there's a chance of losing position between measurements. no problem for you. The build quality is very good and the construction has a good weight. This is a very useful tool. I also like the ability to switch measurements from millimeters to decimal inches to fractional inches. The conversion from decimal inches to millimeters is normal, but the ability to show fractions on the display is a great feature that makes this model unique. This model also has some software/USB features that might make it very useful for some people, but I probably won't be using it. Conclusion: Well made product at a good price. I love it and I recommend it.
