Review on 🐠 Hikari Bacto-Surge Foam Filter for 125 Gallon Aquarium - Effective Aquarium Solution by Morgan Ostwalt

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A filter that works great for any size aquarium from 10 gallons and up!

I really like this foam filter. I have 12 freshwater tanks from 10 to 55 gallons and have used similar hydro-sponge filters as pre-filters for other filters for several years because they prevent small critters from being sucked into the pumps and prevent pump clogging and bio-filter debris. Media. For Endler Live Media's new 55 gallon tank, I decided to try these Hikari brands to see how they compare. The only disappointment is that the sponge is slightly larger than the Hydro Sponge and its hardware doesn't work. along with hydro-sponge, which prevents them from being easily replaced. For my overfilled 55 gallon tanks I use 2 sponges stacked on top of each other at the pump inlet which double surface area distributes the inlet flow very well. They are approximately 1 inch taller and have a larger diameter than the XL Hydro Sponge, giving them more volume to hold beneficial bacteria while still fitting in a 55 gallon tank. I like the density of this sponge. The Hydro-Sponge brand sometimes has a large pore size that offers less surface area inside, while others have a very small pore size that clogs very quickly. Despite buying the same brand of Revain Hydro-Sponge each time, the density of the sponge was unpredictable and never optimal. Like Goldilocks and the three bears, this Hikari-branded sponge takes center stage: the pore size is small enough to provide plenty of room for bacteria, but doesn't clog too quickly with small dirt particles. a homemade canister filter (5 gallon bucket of SeaChem DeNitrate) that I hid under the tank. The aquarium is densely planted to provide hiding places for small fish and these sponges keep the water crystal clear even though there are around 1500 fish in the tank. I started 6 months ago with 25 adults breeding like crazy with good water quality. Although there are now about 50 times more fish in the tank than I would recommend for a tank this size, these sponges clean up easily with a 5 gallon water change once a week. pump, I get a really good flow of water, but it distributes it so well that even small juvenile fish spend a lot of time eating scraps of food and algae without being harmed by a 1000 gallon per hour pump. Addition to almost every aquarium. For a 10 gallon tank, an air pump connected to the air stone that comes with the sponge will suffice. With a 20 or 30 gallon tank, one of these would make an excellent pre-filter at the inlet of an overhead tank (HOB) or external canister. For 55 gallon tanks and up, it's easy to string 2 of these together to pre-filter any filtration you have.
