If it doesn't work right away, buy a new battery!
I was disappointed when the included battery didn't work, but another review said if you're having trouble it could be the battery. So I got a new one from the store and now it works great. I was able to sort my jewelry well. It's good to spend $20, the lens is good too - in case you don't get it, there's a cap on the top. You must remove the cap to use the sensor. 3 stars for "easy to use" because it's a bit confusing, I had to read the instructions several times, and with a bad battery it took a while. .
