Replacing the cable modem with a Zoom 5341J solved my problems, but I'm still not convinced that the Apple Time Capsule is completely bug-free - sometimes, due to some strange interaction, it got into a state where it didn't even look at the Airport Utility responded with the Arris modems. Four stars because it works great now.
