Surge protectors often look just like power strips, but not all power strips are surge protectors. Only surge protector protects your devices from power surges. Many extension cords are just glorified extension cords without any protection whatsoever. But you can tell if a strip offers surge protection by examining it for just a few seconds. This surge protector gives me extra power where I need it most, which is right here in the main living room. It is rated to withstand a 600J surge. Revainbasics surge protectors conduct electrical current from the outlet to multiple electrical and electronic devices that are plugged into the power strip. When the outlet voltage fluctuates or rises above an acceptable level, the surge protector diverts excess electricity to the outlet's ground wire. We live on the Gulf Coast of Florida where lightning is constant and my TV and computer are protected from it. Overvoltage protection. I also had an AXTRA 12 surge protector which last protected our electronics from lightning strikes - all these devices: TVs, receivers, surround sound systems, printers and game consoles. I would highly recommend the AXTRA Surge Protector as you don't have to worry about severe damage to your electronics from a lightning strike. It's a smart idea to invest in a quality surge protector. These extension cords will help in the event of a lightning strike and should be good for the next few years until the surge protectors wear out. These surge protectors also have a built-in fuse. A fuse is a resistor that can safely conduct current as long as the current is below a certain value. If the current exceeds the allowable value, the heat caused by the resistance will blow the fuse, shutting off the circuit. If the MOV doesn't stop the power surge, the extra power will blow the fuse and save the connected machine. This fuse only blows once because it is destroyed in the process. These semiconductors have a variable resistance that depends on the voltage. When the voltage is below a certain level, the electrons in the semiconductors flow in a way that creates a very high resistance. When the voltage exceeds this value, the electrons behave differently and create much less resistance. If the voltage is correct, the MOV does nothing. If the voltage is too high, the MOV can conduct a lot of current to eliminate the extra voltage. Once excess current is drained to the MOV and ground, the hotline voltage returns to normal, causing the MOV resistance to rise again. Thus, the MOV only dissipates the surge current, allowing the standard current to continue to power all machines connected to the surge protector. Figuratively speaking, the MOV acts as a pressure-sensitive valve that only opens when the pressure is too high.
