Not compatible with bettas - aquarium water treatment

My betta has already suffered from fin rot. I'm not sure if that made him worse or not. 2 weeks after I put 1/2 leaf in his tank he developed dropsy which killed him in less than 2 days. Not sure if it was him related or not because his dropsy came on overnight. He was fine, he was active, he ate and then bang, he didn't eat for 2 days and the scales started to peel off a bit. He died on the 2nd day without food. I'm not sure what happened, but it was the only new thing I did. He was the only fish so I won't use that for the next fish.
