Review on Berkey Sport Filtered Bottle Portable by Wayne Martin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great all round filtration system

This is a great portable water filtration system. Uses the same filtering as the larger Berkey filters, just with a smaller capacity. Unlike some competitors, this filter removes (most) viruses, bacteria, protozoa, harmful chemicals and heavy metals - all in one device. Some other filtration systems can remove bacteria but not viruses, or some chemicals but not heavy metals. This device does everything. Another benefit of this design is that you can force water through a straw, allowing you to give clean water to pets or fill a cup with clean water, as opposed to systems that simply require you to drink through a straw. Sucking through a straw is effortless and similar to comparable stand-alone filter bottles. It's relatively compact, fits in a backpack or cup holder, and - in both of my purchased devices - it absolutely doesn't leak when rolled over or break if dropped. The filter is easy to replace and will last for several gallons of filtered water, depending on the source. The design protects the straw from dust and external contaminants when not in use and makes it easy to transport with a carrying ring to which a carabiner or link can be attached. What's not to like? Well, nothing is perfect (although this system still deserves five stars for its universality). The design is almost semi-disposable - light (which is also a plus), but maybe too light, almost like at the fair. Longevity remains to be seen, but it doesn't feel particularly heavy. The drinking mechanism works and again the water can be squeezed into the cup but the clasp is essentially just squeezing the straw to keep the water from escaping (which my units don't have so that works) but it looks like it does it might come loose. with time. But if you take it for what it is, you can rest assured that you'll take your bottle to Revein Basin (or anywhere else on the planet) and drink pure, uncontaminated, delicious water from almost any source. It's relatively inexpensive, comparable to similar products that aren't as effective, it's lightweight, easy to carry when full, and reusable. To be fair, and to me, if it's good for half a dozen wilderness trips and prevents serious waterborne illness or infection or poisoning from toxic chemicals, it's worth paying the entrance fee just to have it when needed to replace. Highly recommended.
