Review on LG 34UM88C-P 34 Inch UltraWide 3440X1440P Monitor with Screen Split 2.0, OnScreen Control, Flicker Safe, AMD FreeSync™ Technology by Michael Zilinskas

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Stunning image, high quality, thoughtful design

It was the first UltraWide monitor I've ever owned and it has always worked at twice the standard 4:3 or 16:9 size. This installation is no longer running due to this purchase that amazed me. Normally, when it comes to consumer electronics, I'm a loyal Samsung customer through and through. However, when one is on a budget, the list of available options that fit the bill often doesn't include Samsung products. But I knew their LG South Koreans aren't the type to downplay effort or design by half, so I ordered. The box arrived via UPS about 5 days after ordering. IMPORTANT NOTE. For those of you who work with normal shipping times please note this was sent to me unsigned. It doesn't usually matter much, but if you look at the photo of the box I've attached, you can see that the contents of the box are very clearly labeled. I asked the UPS driver even if he delivered it if I wasn't home he would just leave. He said "Yes" as if I had asked a question. We continue. Unpacking was easy, as was assembling the stand and mounting hardware. The image quality is incredibly sharp and quickly exceeded my expectations (again, beware, never used before). LG includes the application and drivers on a CD that you want to install after the first connection. With an app called OnScreen Control (pictured), you can customize your screen layout in a variety of ways, splitting it into various smaller virtual screens to suit your needs. It was pretty easy to figure out, but I didn't read the manual to see what I was missing in terms of advanced settings. A very small criticism I made was that LG people expected a lot from me! I really don't know much about computers or their peripherals and had no idea which of the cables I need, would the monitor work as one unit or would my graphics card see it as two monitors giving the best picture and performance? Probably stupid questions for a lot of people, and I ended up using my Google-Fu skills to figure it out (requires a cable between HDMI and DisplayPort, ceteris paribus comes with DisplayPort). Finally, and I'll leave it on a positive note, another feature I found better than my previous experience with monitors is the user interface and input mechanism for manually changing configuration and display settings. Instead of all the buttons and settings screens looking like they are in hindsight, there's a small recessed 4-way joystick under the LG logo icon, which is extremely intuitive to use.
