Review on Z Plus Torch Flame Lighter Insert by Anthony Juat

Revainrating 3 out of 5

A good technical update, but with its own problems.

The insert is VERY tight, so tight I have to squeeze it with pliers to get it out of the Zippo case. When the liner arrived I filled it up and blew out air. came out and then tried to light it. The spark worked well, you could hear the gas escaping, but the flame didn't burn. I worked with this for a few minutes and found that I had to use the flame adjuster on the bottom to change the height of the flame, pushing it all the way down to get a constant light. I really wanted a higher flame from this lighter. I was only able to adjust the flame slightly from its minimum height to get an even light every time. The hinge arm inside, which is usually a spring system for a regular Zippo lighter, is rigid on this insert. , and it doesn't have the snappy snap of an original Zippo lighter. Hopefully after some use it will become flexible and loosen up. As I don't smoke but do use lighters for hobbies and projects, fire is a staple you can't live without and unlikely to be used on a regular basis. Smoker, but I still need a constant flame source. I'm still weighing its usefulness versus a regular Zippo insert, but I like the "jet" flame more than the Zippo's soft glow. However, the "Jet" flame of this insert is not as windproof as the Zippos flame. It's easy to blow it out. That's my take on the action.

Pros
  • Z Plus lighter insert
Cons
  • New competition is here
