Form over function: bags, holsters and cases

This is a classic case where form over function. It looks good, but in practice it has a few significant disadvantages. Good ----------- This case looks very good on the phone. It fits great and looks good – until you get the hang of it. It's a fingerprint magnet and quickly becomes a messy mess. On the other hand, in its pure form it retains the beautiful lines and aesthetics of the 'bare' phone quite well. The phone cover is basic and when it's on the phone will recognize it's on and offer some additional options for persistent display and compatible themes. (mostly for the price). It protects well from scratches on both the front and back, but don't count on drop protection. It's a thin plastic case with a thin rubber loop that extends forward and covers the inside. When closed, a translucent rubber lining on the inside of the lid allows you to see whatever's on the display. It will look a little washed out due to the rubber. It closes and stays closed well and works well with minimal impact on battery life. Wireless charging was not negatively impacted in any way and worked well with Samsung and various third-party wireless charging pads. Poor ------ --- With the cover on, the first obstacle occurs when trying to use the camera. Folding the cover for easy gripping of the phone will cover the camera. Only selfies are not affected. Trying to hold the clamshell phone for a photo becomes a juggling exercise with the phone falling over more than once. When gripping from the side, the fingers get in the way when taking portrait shots. It's just impractical and difficult to use. Another key downside is the way the case covers the phone. This makes it slightly wider than the phone itself. This means that any type of phone holder with a clip (like the one in your car) will not work. It will pinch the thin cover while the phone itself is loose. Any sudden acceleration and the weight of the phone can cause it to detach from the mount. Even with slotted phone holders (slotted on both sides), the cover doesn't securely hold the phone itself. Finally, for use with any car phone mount, the case must be removed. Using a magnetic holder (a steel disc glued to the back of the case) would fix this problem, but then the phone would not be usable with wireless charging. Summary---------- - If you don't use a car mount or wireless charger, the two main disadvantages don't apply. I really like the back of the case. It looks like a bare phone. I wish they would make a case like this! That said, the case itself is good, but it effectively kills the phone's overall usefulness and affordability. If you like flip covers at all, these cons probably don't apply to you. If you like the look of the phone and don't need drop protection, this might also be a viable option. For me, the ability to hold the phone and use the camera made me look for another case for 2 days.
