Heavy duty softbox: my feedback

This is a post test revue of the 32" x 48" fotodiox lightbox. As per usual it was mounted on an ellinchrom 500 head. OK as you already know if you have read any of my other reviews this are heavy items and not really addapted to being put up and taken down every day but if you have available space to have them up over a long period it is an extremely interesting budget lightbox. The construction is very heavy duty. The double baffles give an incredibly soft light. The outer baffle velcros inside the lip of the outer black shell and gives a natural cut off. The inner reflector material is a bit weird but does exactly what it should do. Judging by its weight I am not sure i would want to use it on a girraffe for fear that it is too heavy for the flash head mount. Talking of which the speed ring is overly heavy and feels like it is made of solid lead. The fit isnt as sharp as an OEM ellinchrom rotolux speedring but bearing in mind the complete box costs the price of the OEM speedring, it isnt a surprise. You can use this box for any number of image types, soft portrait, product or pack shots or as a general fill on a food shoot for example. What is very good is that it takes the deep throat design used by rotolux on the hexagonal boxes, to give a deep reflected light. Maybe this is where its extreme softness comes from. If you want a harder light there are ways of doing that as well but you will have to find that out for yourself. I wont give you all my secrets. It bangs out a very healthy amount of light.Conclusion. A heavy duty workhorse, not for mobile use but a definate good bargin for studio use.

Pros
  • The strip design of this softbox allows for directional, narrow lighting, making it perfect for creating dramatic shots with clearly defined shadows and highlights
Cons
  • Limited compatibility with other photography equipment, requiring additional adaptors or attachments
