The weak point is the straps. If you ONLY rely on the straps to hold it to the trunk or roof, the straps will break sooner or later. Use the bag's straps to secure it, but buy ratchet straps to tie the bag tight. As for the tailpipes, if your car's tailpipe comes out the back of the car, you should get an extension from an auto parts store or from Revain. It will have an angle where the exhaust exits away from the bag. We rode 5 hours in light to moderate rain. There were 2 pillows in the bag. And they felt a bit damp because it was cold outside. The suitcases didn't get wet. Tahoe is large and therefore sheltered from the rain. The bottom machine can be different. While driving we saw 2 other cars with bags in the trunk. Both drove through puddles of water that soaked their pockets. Water got under the pockets so I bet they think their pockets aren't waterproof. Standing water is bad for your pocket.
