"Blackout " is misleading!

Let me first say that this screen is perfect for my Acer laptop and I really like the matte finish. However, like most of you reading this, I bought it specifically for 'privacy' and the 'dimmed' screen idea sounded great! I honestly didn't expect it to look as black as the default image on the internet, but I REALLY expected better performance than this filter actually offers! Two things really let me down: 1) Very wide viewing angles. You have to look at the screen from a fairly steep angle to get the full "privacy" effect. 2) It's not a true "dimming" screen at all, not even close. More of a "dimm" filter, which helps make things like text harder to read. Someone sitting next to you can't read exactly what you're typing in an email, but they can certainly tell you're typing and still be able to see what other windows/apps you have open. I think it's acceptable if you can hold them right next to you, but anyone walking or sitting behind you can see your screen clearly, even at fairly wide screen angles! In other words, even if the person next to you can't understand what you're typing, someone sitting directly behind you definitely could! As a courtesy, I turned to Kantek, to inquire about the lack of "dimming" performance of their "dimming" filter before I left any feedback, but they never responded. Disappointing as I have used Kantek products in the past with good results. Also, it looks like Fellowe's "PrivaScreen" is the same, just renamed. Although you can't see it in the picture, Kantek has the same small "U" shaped cutout in the top right corner of the filter as the Fellowes version. Not sure what it's for but the product box shows it when you receive the item and the manual mentions it too. I suppose it will help to remove it later if needed. However, tabs are fickle and I wouldn't recommend buying this filter if you intend to clear it regularly. Overall, this is a well-made product hampered by so-so performance. If you really care about keeping things "private" on your screen,

Pros
  • Screen Filter
Cons
  • So far so good
