compared to the xm8500 it is much better, no buzzing and does not distort the sound when talking near amateur radio i know it is 5 times more expensive but worth it I run it on FM radio via Protools EQ Gate and Limiter with Pureformer Transducer and Mbox mini, but on HF radio right on the radio with little EQ settings in the menu and a little boost sounds great. I haven't tried sm58 but I bet they are close I've heard that sm58 has changed the quality in the last 5 years so I don't risk it I have foam because when I close the conversation the number of air blasts is reduced, but it doesn't require foam to be on the inside of the grille and the element is shock absorbing and very upward directional so it doesn't pick up unwanted noise unless they are upward directional. So if you're looking for a clear, natural-sounding mic, this is it.
