The Beyerdynamic DT880 immediately impressed me with its professional German build quality, lightness and comfort. The first thing I noticed when I took them out of the box was that they were a lot lighter and more flexible than I expected. I bought the premium 250 ohm model in black. As far as I know there is a "Pro" model with a coiled cord and a fixed fit. I have relatively large ears so I was a bit concerned that the cups were too small. This turned out not to be the case at all and I think they are the most comfortable headphones I currently own. I decided to purchase the DT880 because I recently acquired a Line 6 HX Stomp guitar modeling system and a budget option. and the reference headphones I had weren't very good for guitar frequencies. The two best options I had were the venerable Sony MDR-7506 (great all-round headphones with a flat frequency response, but they tend to sound "hissed" on guitar) and the Sennheiser HD280PRO (better for guitar, but a bit heavy) . uncomfortable and still not sounding perfect). Several people have recommended the DT880 to me because it's a semi-open design that I haven't used before. Closed-back headphones are great for isolation and booming bass, but they typically lack depth and realism in the way they sound. It's hard to describe, but you can immediately notice the difference with the semi-open design. I found them much more comfortable to wear for long periods of time and the sound had a "3D feel", almost like I was in a room and could hear and feel the sound waves getting closer and farther remove from my ears. The DT880 really doesn't compromise on bass or overall sound quality. Especially on guitar, where boomy low frequencies are either inappropriate or undesirable, they transported accurately modeled guitar tones to my ears without sounding strained or "hissing". This kit instantly became my go-to companion for all my guitar playing needs, and in a quiet environment I think it would make a great sound production/mastering kit, although I'll definitely be keeping the MDR-7506 closed. rear alternative.
