We have used a manual collar before and have been able to teach with great success that the beep is prelude to vibration which was prelude to shock. Despite our best efforts to keep a low profile, our pet became smart enough to realize that her collar only shocked her when we noticed her misbehavior. She heard a button click on the remote control and calculated the relationship. When we weren't there, she did hooligans and got away with it. So we had to switch to this system so that the forbidden places would correct themselves even if we weren't watching. She reacts immediately to the sound signal and quickly understands where she is not allowed to go. That is a big help.
