My husband and I watched a video of a doctor at the University of Michigan Sinus Center testing an $800 unit using a homemade air purifier with a filter and a box fan, and she performed almost the same (fan for $ 800 filtered out particles slightly better). After seeing the results and doing some research we decided to buy these filters and a box fan to make our own air filter. We basically attach the filter with tape (or you can attach it with a zip tie) to the front of the fan box and it filters just like a more expensive unit. Aesthetically it looks terrible, but in terms of performance it's amazing. I can definitely tell the difference walking from our living room to our bedroom.
