Knee of the Curve - Home Audio

For context, in this review I'm listening to Dvorak's 9th with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Witold Rowicki. When listening to a Sony D-NE330 with Shure E3C in-ear headphones, the brass, especially the trombones, sometimes "torn the brass". The picture on the Sony was excellent thanks to the recording. The woodwind choir in particular was square and stable, with the bassoon to the right of center and the clarinet to the left. The headphone sound was slightly better when I put a CD in my Onkyo C-7030 and used the headphone jack. Everything changes when I use a coax cable from Onkyo to the SMSL SU-8, then balanced jacks from there to my Matrix HPA-3B and a balanced cable to my Sennheiser HD800S headphones. The image widens and the "gap" transforms into the fabulous vibrant color that London was known for at the time of this shot. The placement of the strings in the image is perfectly clear, adding depth to the understanding of Dvorak's attention. is issued to direct items through these sections. The improvement in the color of the brass was also noticeable in the strings. Other times I've tried this device with a USB input from both a laptop and a Cayin N3. There are no problems playing all formats for which the SMSL SU-8 was developed. The sound quality is on par with my ears. In terms of design, this device packs a lot of features into a small size: internal power supply, USB and coaxial input, balanced XLR outputs, remote volume control, wide-format compatibility. Incredible value for money. In terms of sound, my system works at the "knee of the curve": the price point where I could spend a lot more and with my old ears don't hear a drop of difference. With this link in my audio chain, I just listen to music and don't think about the "next upgrade" my system needs. And I look forward to the next opportunity to sit down and listen to old CDs again, now with new vibrancy and listening comfort.
