Review on Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens - Fixed Black (6310B002) for US Cameras by Virot Rongrot ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The purchase brought only positive emotions.

For a year and a half I photographed only with Nikons. A few months ago I decided to try and canon. I have only one Canon DSLR so far and it is quite old - Canon 400D. I have a broken whale lens for it, 55-250 (2 pieces), 50 1.8. Foreword in order to make it clear that I am not a professional and not a canonist, I'm just a photography enthusiast. Now about the lens. He's great! This is the main thing you need to know if you are planning to buy it. It is cheap - only 50 1.8 is cheaper. He is quite small. Only my Soviet Industar 50-2 is smaller (by the way, it is very much smaller, 2 times). He is well put together. Despite the plastic in the case, it does not hold together and feels solid. The bokeh in it is pleasant, in my opinion, even better than that of 50 1.8, but it already tastes and color. It focuses 2 times faster than 50 1.8. The speed is very noticeable. Moreover, in the dark, focusing is also faster. With the Canon fifty dollars, I compared 50 1.8D from Nikon. And in terms of focusing speed, the canon lost, often in the dark it didn’t catch focus at all. 40 2.8 catches focus in almost any conditions and extremely quickly. Even on my ancient carcass, it is almost silent. So, for the price of a whale, you can get an excellent fix, which, according to a number of parameters, makes glasses 2-4 times more expensive, and is also suitable for a full-frame carcass. In my opinion, just as Nikon's purchase of 35 1.8 for crop is obvious, Canon's purchase of this lens is obvious. For those who choose between 50 1.8 and 40 2.8, I can not give advice. Having both, it's hard for me to say which is better. Still, the difference in focal lengths and aperture makes itself felt. In my opinion, given the price, nothing prevents you from taking both lenses, and in the future, perhaps abandoning one in favor of the other. Well, or take any - they are both worth their money and will delight you with excellent shots. Thank you all for your attention and more successful photos!

Pros
  • 1. Price. Canon's second cheapest fix. 2. Size - the smallest autofocus lens I know for DSLRs. 3. Aperture. Yes, 2.8 is not 1.4, but still better than in dark zooms. 4. The quality of the case. 5. The quality of the resulting picture. 6. Focusing speed. 7. Suitable for full frame cameras.
Cons
  • Probably not for this price. Inconvenient focal length or low aperture - these are not glass flaws, but features. But this lens has no objective disadvantages :)
