Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Sony DRU-720A Internal DVD+R Double Layer/DVD+RW (4X+R, 16X+RW, 8X-R): High Performance DVD Burning and Rewriting Capabilities by Jose Cox

Revainrating 3 out of 5

After 9 months and 3 discs (replaced by Sony with DRU810A) it still doesn't work!

The first drive worked perfectly in the test, then the CD burner died the next time it was used. Then they switched (to Sony) 2 more times for DOA discs. These days Sony spends forever replacing parts and they lost a drive which THEY took out of the carrier because it was incredibly poorly packaged) and about 2.5 months later I called to find out why they didn't have another sent a replacement hard drive. They said they had "no record of receiving the CD". I asked why they didn't verify their account with the operator that THEY took back the drive 2 months later and didn't get any response other than that they would send another drive and I'm still waiting for it! I've seen several websites banning Sony (after research) and I can see why! Their customer service AND the quality of their products has definitely gone wrong in my opinion. While most of the companies I work with will exchange an item and often ship it to me after a few days (or even the next day in some cases), Sony doesn't, and it was gnashing of teeth to force them to the last drive which had about 4 inches of play on one side in the box with no spacers between the box and the drive so it probably ate it on delivery and now they say they don't make this drive anymore! They decided all on their own to send the "update" without checking if it was compatible with the system it was used on (although they have the idea that bugs will occur to get their drives working , and we went through the flash BIOS and STILL to no available - it was with the first drive that just failed after one use!) I now avoid Sony for big jobs and buy hardware from more reliable sources with better return policies. Plextor has better customer/seller service in my experience so for any upgrades OR any future hardware After this experience I will be looking for "non-Sony" parts and customer service.

Pros
  • High-quality workmanship
Cons
  • Socket required
