Review on πŸ“Έ Sony SEL30M35 30mm f/3.5 Macro Fixed Lens with e-mount by Jonathan Lloyd

Revainrating 5 out of 5

WIRE Sharp, light, versatile on my Sony A6300/6000

I have read almost all the reviews available and decided to take a chance, especially as I used one carefully from Revain Stock at a significant discount. I love the lens. It arrived a day earlier than expected and in excellent condition. I immediately started testing with a small dryer sheet that I shot with regular zooms and extension tubes. The lens' flat field of view and sharpness give it an edge over lenses that aren't designed for close-up work. The difference isn't big, but it's noticeable, and as a convinced "sharpness freak" I'm very satisfied. The lens also doubles well as an equivalent 45mm 'normal' to infinity. I'm an avid zoom fan, but a very sharp close focus lens would be handy. I've added some shots taken with it at distances that any normal lens would focus on. The sharpness is amazing and the lens performs equally sharp at all apertures, unlike many zooms which start to deteriorate at smaller apertures. A small shot of sensor cleaners was taken at f/22. All my zooms lose critical sharpness, stopping well above f/11 and degrading noticeably at f/22. Tip: If you find your subject is too close to the front element, add a 10mm extension tube. This gives you the same magnification from a little further away and doesn't compromise sharpness in the slightest. This is how the extreme close-up of the leaf was created.

Pros
  • Minimum working distance of only 9.75 cm at 1:1 magnification
Cons
