I would argue that the error seems biased towards higher temperatures for colder objects and lower temperatures for hotter objects, but it actually varied even more depending on where exactly I was aiming on the cup or pan. The only thing I can say. It's safe to say that you shouldn't treat temperature readings as anything other than an approximation to within about ±5°C, and if you're within half a foot of an object you pretty much know what it's like. the object should be like this, and you measure the point that turns out to be more radiant and less reflective. However, I have found that the thermometer is still quite useful when working within these limits. An absolute reading is accurate enough for many household applications, and of course many of these are not applicable when comparing relative time differences in measurements at the same point on the same object.
