Review on WELLAX Ultralight Air Sleeping Pad: Inflatable Mattress For Backpacking, Traveling, Camping & Hiking - Includes Repair Kit & Carry Bag! by Jonah Riggle

Mixed feelings but it's definitely worth keeping

Taking it out of the package, it looked really long and big, I didn't realize that uninflated it would look like that. It's an interesting product! When you blow it up, the bubbles expand and the whole thing shrinks to a normal pad size, but it's plenty big. This blows up really easily, it was under 10 breaths. Laying down on it, my first impression was that it's a little crinkly and the material gives me the chills. I hope that gets better over time. The crinkly noise doesn't seem to happen once I lay down though. It's still link a plastic feel though. I can see why some people would say that their body hits the ground, because between the bubbles, there's no air at all, so if you are not laying on it fully, you're going to have that issue as the air moves around. But if you lay on it with your whole weight, it's great and you feel pretty far off the ground. But if you kneel on it, like you do when you get up, your knees will hit the ground because the air moves to other bubbles. It's kind of interesting that way. I tried laying on my side since that was a common complaint and while it's not as airy as laying on your back or stomach, it is still mostly fine but you do feel closer to the ground laying on the side because this thing operates on needing pressure on most of the pad, not just a tiny piece. After I was done with it, I rolled it back up and it's about a third of the size of my Thermarest, so this is definitely worth keeping for bikepacking. It wouldn't be my primary pick if I didn't have to carry it, but since I do have to carry weight, this pad will be picked over the Thermarest for sure. This pad really needs some sort of strap or something to compress it, since we are supposed to be using this in an ultralight setting. They give you a bag but it can be compressed a lot more than that bag. I put a velcro strap around it and that seems to be fine.

Pros
  • Compact size allows for easy storage in backpacks, duffel bags, or other travel luggage
Cons
  • May shift around during sleep, causing discomfort
