Review on HandiRack Universal Roof Rack Crossbars: The Ultimate Solution for Kayaks, Canoes, SUPs & Surfboards - Includes Tie Down Straps and Bow/Stern Lines (Black) by David Herman

I was skeptical about inflatable racks. have no choice. 2-door car!

My car is Fiat Abarth. There is no trunk for this car, which is only available from January this year 2013. Even Thule doesn't make a roof rack, not that I'd be willing to pay many hundreds of dollars since my used kayak was only $300! After endless searching I came across the Malone Handi-Rack. With great skepticism I went to the user reviews and bought this product based on the user reviews (and the fact that I had no other alternative!). These roof racks were easy to install on the car. I was concerned about having to attach both racks through a door. My car has two doors and the rear windows are clerical so both porters only had to use the front door. The pump has two attachments (attached so you can't lose or misplace it - pretty awesome actually, especially as I would definitely lose it). A nozzle is inflated; the other releases air. The small pump is very light and works great. I attached the "racks" to the roof, inflated them, loaded the kayak and tied it down with the straps that came with it. Drove from Boston to Maine's Mid Coast. For the first hour that I was on guard, I even touched it to make sure everything was in place and hadn't given way. After kayaking when reloading the kayak it slipped during movement but not the fault of the trunk system. The straps didn't go through the same rings at the front and allowed the kayak to slide around a bit. As with any roof system, you need to be careful and careful when securing the racks and cargo. My ride was stable at 50-80 mph and in the middle of the road I had complete confidence in the system. I had no problems inflating and the kayak is still loaded. After five days the struts have not lost any air and the kayak remains cushioned and well off the top of the vehicle. I have also used this on my glass sunroof with no problems. I found the stand to be quiet, without the annoying noise I had when wearing factory installed stands on my Frontier. I have a great photo, but I don't see Revane uploading it. Happy trails!

Pros
  • YOUR TRANSPORT MADE EASIER: A smart solution for transporting your gear and luggage. The perfect roof rack for a kayak in the summer and skis in the winter. A smart, economical alternative to foam blocks or a metal roof rack.
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other picks
