Review on MikroTik Routerboard RB2011 UiAS-2HnD-IN with SFP Port and 10 Ethernet Ports by Kevin Huot

With new fiber in the house it was time to replace my old WRT54GL (with DD-WRT) with a higher performing router and it suited my needs. (I moved an old router to our AirBnB guest house and connected it to this with a hidden cable on its own subnet.) I'm using Linux Mint and the WinBox software works fine through Wine. There is also a web interface, but WinBox is more convenient as it offers features like drag and drop for reordering firewall rules. Some features seem to be only available through the command line interface. Speaking of the firewall, it has a lot more options than consumer routers. I set up port interception with a firewall so I can access my system from anywhere while keeping all ports hidden. The firewall also protects my IP camera so it can't reach China or anywhere else (besides my port connection), but it keeps track of every address the camera tries to connect to. (I've seen two addresses so far, both of which are listed as objectionable on the web.) Stateful firewall that allows me to add rules so I can connect from my main network to the guest network, but the guest cannot connect to my main network . I have work to do. I'm working on getting OpenVPN working (also with port interception) and also plan to change my settings to use VLANs to give me a bit more control. There are many great built-in utilities like a traffic generator and a packet sniffer. . Built-in scripts are also a powerful feature. You can also run scripts on a schedule. Firmware updates are very easy and you can even write a script to automatically update the firmware as needed. There are also many features that I will never use at home, such as MPLS and BGP. The router is small, runs cool, and the all-metal construction feels solid. Having 10 ports is handy. The router doesn't support the highest WiFi speeds, but that's enough for my needs. The documentation isn't as mature as other brands, but the Mikrotik website has a wiki and forum to help answer my questions. Now I want all my routers to be Mikrotik. Maybe one day.
