In my case (1966 Mustang) I don't want the end of the bolt to protrude too far out of the end of the spring. If this is the case, the spring may not be sitting properly in its seat. So I had to add a stack of 15 washers to get the compression I needed without extending the bolt past the end of the spring. It took a lot of work with my ratchet and socket to figure it all out! My guess is that caution before using an impact wrench comes with an unmentioned risk. I suspect the risk is that the impact wrench will compress the spring faster but give less warning when one of the hook arms starts to straighten and fails. I had this once and the only damage was the garage door grille which a spring flew out of when the supercharger device tripped. If any part of my body got in the way, I'm sure the spring would go through it too.
