I did not purchase this unit to examine coins but I need lower magnification than most of these units provide and I see a lot of people asking. The first one I ordered was 50x-1200x with a 7 inch screen and for comparison you could see about 1/2 a cent on the lowest power setting. This one claims 5x-260x. In reality, at full magnification you can view a full quarter of the US on screen, making this instrument better for hobbyist and soldering applications than for microscopic study of leaves or insects Lens and base so you can get there to manipulate what you are working on. 8x digital zoom is available via the buttons on the control panel, so there's no need to bring the endoscope closer to the reel unless you want to get *really* close. There's some loss of resolution with digital zoom, but that's not a problem for soldering or tinkering. So far image quality is quite good for the price, but is limited by the capabilities of the screen, although the ring light and two extra bulbs are adjustable, it is sometimes a bit difficult to find a good light balance if the object you are looking at doesn't look dark on the screen and doesn't blur completely. I have not used it to take photos or videos. Assist lights only work when plugged in, but you can use the scope and built-in ring light on battery power. The two screws that attach the mast to the base attach easily, so don't over-tighten them. Manual focus seems to work smoothly and it's easy to adjust the image. I would recommend if you are not looking for maximum magnification or are looking for something for a hobby/work without optics. This seems to work well for coins as well, unless you need to look at them at the molecular level. I was able to easily zoom in on the penny enough for the date to fill the entire screen.
