I like the '901' base iron and both bits, however it is not for splicing 18ga wire that is properly fluxed. I realize this coiled wire is now twice as thick (for mechanical strength), but my 45 year old battery operated Hungarian who just failed soldered the exact same spliced wire with ease. Actually, that's exactly what I expected from the Hakko T11-D4 handpiece. This T11D4 tip will probably solder 18ga wire with no problem when connected to a PCB and I expect it will work with any large component like a diode etc when connected to a PCB. If I hadn't had success with my other rechargeable iron, I probably never would have expected the Hakko device to do what the outdated Hungarian did.
