Review on Oxel Insect & Butterfly Habitat by David Gonzalez

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Really need better access, two zips AND double zips will help!

I bought two of these small houses and two large ones. I've already written a 5 star review of a large one and can't seem to get into my review to change it, so in this review I'll only show what I consider a downside. I had a really bad day with late instar monarch caterpillars who decided to prepare for pupation right at the zip line. The first horrible deaths were when I unzipped it without even thinking that caterpillars could be right inside it. I was horrified to see two of them being caught and dying. I don't know WHY they gather at the zip, but I see it happening to younger, earlier ages when they're hiking too. Every few hours I have to climb into the boxes, refill the milkweed and clean the flour. If they zip up the inside, I can't! These dwellings could use a zipper with a double zipper on both sides. So, for example, if someone parked on the right side of the zipper, you can open it on the left to move the little person. And if there were holes on BOTH sides of the box it would be VERY useful. I feel terrible killing these creatures! I can't open my two drawers at this moment without killing the caterpillars! My only option is to cut open the box and then patch it up somehow. It's so frustrating!

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Some problems
