I *love* how easy this device is to set up. It's really plug and play, although you'll have to follow the instructions, visit the website, and update the firmware to the latest version only to complete that task sooner rather than wait. That being said, setup is very simple: plug a network cable into a port on the device, connect the other end to a wired connection on your router (or switch or hub) on the same network as your HDHomerun tuner, and connect the power adapter for that device and to an available electrical outlet. That's all. There's no need to set it up, no complicated tuning to do, no need to tell the HDHomerun tuner it's there, and no time to spend on an overly technical tuning process. the HDHomerun tuner knows about this, you have made the storage available for use with the HDHomerun DVR service. Unfortunately it is only available with this service and cannot be used for alternative software solutions that you may wish to use. This is a major downside for many as many people have looked at the HDHomerun DVR solution and found it less enjoyable than one might hope. It works, but the experience could be greatly improved. Improvements will take time, however, and there are also fears that other space companies' patents will not be trespassed, meaning things are more limited than many had hoped. In my case, this device and tuner HDHomerun 4K is a bit of a test or toy for use in my home. Teaching my wife or daughter to use the tuners I've provided will (at least for now) be a bigger problem than I'd like. I have existing DVR equipment from one of the most reputable names in the field and am using it with my FiOS provider. They work well and are well known to my husband and daughter. However, if cable TV costs continue to increase, I might be able to reduce costs by going back to using HDHomerun Prime with an M card along with HDHomerun 4K. This would give me enough tuners and the ability to record content that we might want to watch.
