I store all my files on one hard drive and then back up my files on a second hard drive. The previous hard drives I've used have been both Seagate 4TB units which I really liked but they were a few years old so I wanted to replace them (made by the same company and same location) however I wanted to buy a 5TB hard drive as they aren't much larger than 4TB drives and the extra terabyte means the drive doesn't fill up as quickly Unfortunately there aren't many other brands that make 5TB drives, but luckily I found this drive :) I've only had the drive for about a week so I can't currently comment on the durability of the unit as I can about Seagate but so far it seems to be a great unit. It really does appear to be 5TB and I've already put my 2TB or so digital collection on it. My collection moved quickly and fits easily. However, what I like most about this hard drive is how durable it is. It is encased in a hard protective case with rubber edges. I haven't tested it for drops or anything like that and I hope I never have to, but the construction definitely feels solid. Seagate drives don't seem that durable in comparison, and I've even had hard drive cases to carry them around. This drive will likely survive a shoulder-height drop even on a hard surface, while Seagate drives seem to crack. very easy if you drop it from a small height without a case. The only point of criticism of this Silicon Power Drive is that the connection cable is very short and hardly reaches, despite the USB port of my computer lying next to it. Seagate drives and other drives I've had have always had longer cables. While this is a minor issue as a longer cable can always be purchased separately, it's a shame the longer cable isn't included free of charge as including the longer cable would cost the company very cheaply. Overall, I highly recommend this external hard drive. drive and wish all external hard drives were built that way. As far as I can tell, the 5TB size is accurate. It transfers files quickly and seems very reliable too (if I ever try it I'll update this review with the results). I would only recommend getting a longer cable if you intend to use this drive further away from your computer, but other than that it's a great hard drive. Hard drive cable (below). As you can see, it's a bit longer and reaches the USB ports much easier. Updated August 6, 2019: So I checked the order date and ordered this hard drive on August 18, 2018. Would have received it on August 20, 2018, so is less than a year old. Last week, on Tuesday or Wednesday, it suddenly started opening folders slowly, and the next day it didn't show up in File Explorer. It only appeared under Bluetooth and other devices with a "driver error" message. I tried reinstalling the USB driver for it in Device Manager (where it showed error code 10), but when I did that it just showed up in File Explorer as "Local Disk (G:)" and when I tried to open it on my computer frozen. I have 5 other drives (WD 500GB, Toshiba 1TB, two Seagate 4TB and Seagate 5TB) and except for the Seagate 5TB (which I bought at the same time as this drive) the other 4 are older. than this drive and still works fine (500GB WD is probably about 10 years old and it still works). While I've had occasional failures or adapter drive failures and found microSD cards to fail frequently, my experience with hard drives is that they tend to last a long time, and this Silicon Power hard drive is the first exception. While 5 drives might not be the largest sample size, my experience so far has been that hard drives last a while, so I was disappointed that this drive failed so quickly, especially one that's supposed to be strong and durable (although, what's the point? have an extremely protective case when the drive inside is mediocre?). I would give this drive one star based on that experience alone. However, I emailed Silicon Power and although they were unable to offer me a way to repair the drive here at home (it doesn't show up in Disk Management before the USB driver reinstall and after the reinstall). This drive is causing Disk Management to hang and not complete opening, so I suspect this indicates a more serious problem with the drive) they offered to give me an RMA number which would allow me to return the drive and ask them to either repair it or send me a replacement. Although I'm not sure I'll be sending it back (it seems difficult to ship and I have to pay for packaging and postage to ship it, plus I used it as an exact replica of a 5TB Seagate hard drive (for example). Lucky if I lose these no data is lost on the Silicon Power drive) and I'm not sure I want to wait weeks without having a backup for the Seagate 5TB drive while Silicon Power is the drive either repaired or sent me a replacement), I'll add another star (two stars total) in the rating for Silicon Power's willingness to fix the problem. It still seems to work when I plug it in. So if I don't send it back to Silicon Power I can try to see if there is a way to fix it locally. I think there's a chance it's as simple as a bad connection somewhere, although it could be more serious and there could be an internal problem with the drive that isn't preventing it from spinning (I hear three soft clicks which is spaced from the drive when it's plugged in, so I'm not sure if that means anything). In any case, this was the first drive I've bought from a small company like Silicon Power, and after the drive failed in less than a year I would be much more reluctant to buy a drive in the future than I would from a bigger one Hard drive manufacturers such as WD or Seagate. While I appreciate Silicon Power's willingness to try and fix the problem, waiting over a week for a replacement drive and having to pay to ship it to Silicon Power doesn't appeal to me." Although I don't like the case of this drive I still think it's excellent I no longer recommend this drive with such enthusiasm as in my experience it's the shortest lived drive I've ever owned. While it worked fine for a year and seemed to transfer and read data as fast as my other drives, if these drives are not recognized by the computer after only a year or two, this is the only way to repair or replace them, it will be a significant hassle, I would recommend buying Seagate or WD instead , and for protection I think Lacdo makes great hard drive carrying cases and they're under $10.
