I wanted this to track my business van but it can be used for other purposes. At this point it performs better than expected from my initial testing, although my expectations were low based on the many bad reviews I've read about other similar devices. Hardware: I have the GT-200, which is a mid-range model. in the series - for a larger battery. This means that instead of a maximum of 14 days it can last up to 45 days (I think the top model lasts around 60-90 days). It's certainly beefy, but very unassuming, no flashing lights, just a small button, and two ports - one for the SIM card and one for charging - are covered with rubber plugs to protect against the weather. The case comes with a magnetic plate. You can replace it with a non-magnetic plate (included). The magnets are strong enough to hold a hefty block to the steel part of the car - I had to find a magnetic piece under the bumper as most modern cars have a lot of plastic and non-ferrous metal parts (like aluminium). However, I am concerned that if the car is hit hard in a pothole or so, it could still be run over. Setting up the device was a bit tricky if you didn't read the instructions. Trust me - you want to read the manual. The hardest part is activating the included SIM card online - reading the tiny numbers. The second most difficult part was carefully removing the correct size SIM card from the rest of the card. But don't worry if you don't get the right size (1 of 3 possible sizes) at the first checkout. The medium-sized bezel is still breakable and will snap into place on the smallest SIM card. You can activate a SIM card without registration, but I recommend you to do it - first create an account, then activate the SIM card and add it to your account. I didn't do it and had to do it later and reset the password that was emailed. (I was worried at one point that it wouldn't link an already activated SIM card to my newly created account, but it worked fine. I downloaded the Ablegrid app for Android (there's also an iOS version that I still have haven't tried it). In short, the app is a little disappointing. It's limited and a little clunky. Historical waypoints disappear from the map over time. So if you want to see the entire itinerary of a trip - a very short trip -, the app also clears the waypoints quickly, I didn't see a way to save waypoints for later review so was very pleasantly surprised later when I decided to try web tracking, it's much better than the phone app - improved user interface , more data, consistent route, lots of polished features. Although, WOW, it's really really cool. I feel like Batman with the new surveillance toy. Now it looks more like e in James Bond device - F. You can only pay for 30 days service ($14.99 + $5 activation fee). It uses the T-Mobile network and works internationally - Mexico-USA-Canada. Since it is not tied to T-Mobile, you can replace the factory SIM card with a SIM card from another carrier/4G carrier. I'll update my review after some more real world testing, but so far I'm impressed with this little tracker.
