Review on πŸ“· Voigtlander 21mm f/1.8 Ultron Lens: Manual Focus Aspherical Lens with Built-in Hood for M Mount Cameras by Michelle Larsen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great lens but I still prefer the Voigtlander 21mm f/4 color scope p

This is a beautifully made lens. Fast and rich in contrast. My RD-1 APS-C CCD shows significantly less vignetting (brightness falloff) compared to its younger brother, the Voigtlander 21mm f/4 Color-Skopar. On my Sony a7s it has much more consistent colors throughout the scene, where Color-Skopar shows a significant green shift at the edges of the sensor (Note: these cross-framing effects should not appear on film; it is an interaction between the lens and the digital sensors). Ultron is also a bit more contrasty and has a lot less internal reflections (things that cause flare in an image when it's pointed directly at a bright light source). identical openings. The Ultron also produces significantly more chromatic aberration compared to a color scope at f/8 (this shows up as red and blue in contrast transitions in the image). How are these compromises to be weighed up? Ultron's chromatic aberration is slightly ignored in most images, while Skopar's rolloff and color shift are quite noticeable. However, rolloff is easier to correct in post-processing (granted, you're doing some dynamic range when correcting, and Photoshop's built-in filters don't quite correct the color shift). Thus, the price of non-digital roll-off correction is Ultron's considerable bulk. But when I compare the extra bulk to the few extra computer clicks it takes to get an adorable miniature skopar, I go for the skopar. I would only leave Ultron if (1) I really needed the extra speed or (2) I couldn't post process the images. So consider the slower 21mm Color Skopar, it's a nice little lens that's super sharp and easy to carry. Other Notes: The Ultron seems to be slightly faster than my Skopar at the same aperture. It may also be slightly less wide than a scopar, but no more. It's easier to focus and handle as the lens is physically larger. The hood is not detachable. The lens cap does not hold well. The front glass protrudes further and is easier to read fingerprints.

Pros
  • Close focus in fast sharp 21mm f/1.8 Ultron lens up to 0.7m
