I have been using this stone to hand sharpen my knives for 2 months. The stone has become perfectly smooth. Simply soak for 15 minutes and occasionally wet while sharpening, done. With 400 grit you can quickly get rid of burrs on your knives and with 1000 grit the cutting edge is polished. Then apply a strip with a green composition, and in less than 15 minutes your hair will be fluttering. I recently bought a knife that had a large nick on the blade as if someone had hit it with the blade of another knife. I sanded the edge all the way down with a sanding wheel to be blunter than a butter knife. It took me about 30 minutes with this stone to go from a perfectly flat dull back to a razor sharp edge. You really don't need expensive stones to get amazing facets. This $13 brick will do the trick. I would also recommend a 6000 grit stone if you want a mirrored edge, but it's not necessary for a razor sharp edge. However, the sling is a must. I would recommend anyone just starting out to sharpen to buy this stone and some very cheap used knives at a flea market or flea market. Watch some YouTube videos and practice freehand sharpening and stick with it. In a month or two you'll be sharpening your knives to incredible sharpness in minutes. You just need to build muscle memory to be consistent.
