Good device, battery life issues

Great little device, easy installation, nice cases. Works internationally (for baggage tracking). Renewing an annual plan after a year looks easy. Just knock us, even at the minimum refresh rate (30 min), the battery life is short. And if you put it in the hold of an airplane for a few hours, the battery will be dead by the end of the flight. Is a software update required to put it to sleep in these situations?
