I used to have a Black and Decker can opener that mounted under the cabinet and worked better than anything I tried. I even bought a used one from a thrift store to replace a worn one because I haven't seen anything better than when it needed replacing. When the used one finally gave up the ghost, I had no choice but to buy a desktop model. I chose this one because of the good reviews. I love that it has a small footprint, the base is sturdy enough to support a 28-ounce can of tomatoes without tipping over, and best of all, the blade and any bits of metal it might knock out aren't can get into my food. All of this and there is no chance of me, my children or my curious terrier being cut by sharp edges. I haven't found a can that doesn't open perfectly. Simply slide the glass under the blade, push down on the handle and let it sink in. My mom who has arthritis will get this as a housewarming gift. It's a well-designed product in a world of poor-quality work, and it's even reasonably priced. You can't go wrong with this.
