Does not work with NiMH batteries

I bought this camera because it has the basic controls I need and because it uses AA batteries. All of my cameras use AA batteries and I have boxes of rechargeable NiMH batteries which I use in many of my electronics. They work perfectly in all my other cameras. The KodakAZ401 camera itself isn't bad for its price, but despite what the documentation says, it doesn't work with NiMH batteries. With freshly charged NiMH batteries, the camera runs for several hours and then shuts down with a message that the batteries are low. Camera. The camera immediately indicated that the batteries were low. A day later the battery indicator showed that the batteries were dead. I took about 6 photos to test the camera. I removed the batteries and measured the voltage. It was 1.320 volts. This is a fully charged NiMH battery. I continued testing to see what would happen and after a few hours the camera would display a low battery message and then turn off. I measured the voltage on the batteries, it was 1.26 volts. 1.26V is the normal operating voltage for a NiMH battery. NiMH batteries leave the charger at up to 1.4V, but then quickly drop to 1.2V for the duration of the charge cycle. So 1.26 volts is a fully charged NiMH battery. The camera's battery type has been correctly set to NI-MH in the settings menu. I removed the same batteries from a Kodak camera and put them in my Nikon CoolPix camera. Nikon indicates that they are fully charged. I hooked up another set of freshly charged NiMH batteries through a Kodak AZ401 and they had the same problem. The camera immediately indicated that the batteries were dead, and after a short time that they were dead. Nothing wrong with batteries. They work on all my other devices. I took a total of 10 photos with this camera and it discharged two sets of freshly charged NiMH batteries. This renders the camera unusable. The Kodak AZ401 camera does not work with NiMH batteries. Given the many other comments regarding battery issues, it is clearly a design flaw and not a device malfunction, so I returned the camera for a refund. .
