Review on 🐠 Aquarium Bio Ceramic Rings for Canister Filter - Efficient Water Changers for Fish Tank by Brent Doolan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Absolute perfection!

I've been using activated carbon and ammonia removers like any other aquarist for decades. BUT once I switched my fish game to African cichlids I started reading, researching, joining online fish groups and learning a lot. The biggest lesson was biomedia. I'm assuming you're knowledgeable about biomedia since you've read the Revain reviews. They arrived quickly and only needed a quick soak and rinse to get the filter ready. I soaked it in fresh water with Seachem Prime to remove the chemicals from my city water. Removed last rinse in water from my tank and then discarded. I left the last batch of charcoal and ammonia in my filter (washed in fish water) to give the bacterial colonies time to "move" into these wonderful ceramic rings. Every week I shook them out into the aquarium water (water into a bucket, then down the drain) and put them back on the hob (hanging from the rear filter). I started with 1 ceramic bag, added another every 2 weeks - started adding old ceramic bags to the canister filter until I had 3 well filled ceramic bags in the canister and 1 in the cooktop. Then I threw away all the carbon and ammonia removers. FOREVER AND EVER. (Charcoal should only be used to remove medication from treated tanks.) The water in my tank is clean and beautiful. It smells wonderful - like a clean, clear lake, and the fish are happy. Now I only use Polyfill, Seachem Purigen (open the ceramic pouch, put the Purigen pouch inside and zip it back) and Biocarrier. THIS IS ALL YOU NEED, FRIENDS! Don't let the pet store tempt you into buying things over and over again for weekly changes. This is not a litter box. Let the bacteria do their job. The most important advice. NEVER wash ceramics in clean water. When you do your weekly water change, shake the bio bag in the fish water until any debris floats to the surface. AND HERE IT IS! If you kill your bacterial colonies with fresh water, you'll recharge your tank, your nitrates will go up, and you'll stress your critters!

Pros
  • Biological filter media for aquarium canister filters porous
Cons
  • slightly wrinkled
