Review on Eccotemp EM-4.0 Electric Mini Tank Water Heater - 4.0-Gallon Capacity by Mark Gilbert

Instantaneous water heater + high efficiency washing machine = you need it

We have replaced our water heaters with a tankless Rinnai system. We then got a new HE washer + dryer. Little did we know that HE washing machines and instantaneous water heaters are incompatible. You cannot wash clothes in hot water, since the HE washing machine allows water to pass through it in small jets. In a tankless system, the water never flows long enough to warm up. This type of device is the only workaround to supply hot water to a washing machine. Appears to be of high quality. It gets hot fast. Looks good and takes up little space. We built our laundry room very small to make better use of space. It can be wonderfully mounted on the wall in the smallest of spaces. To avoid the mistakes I made, it's best to first add all the fittings, tubing, and pressure valve to the unit. The instructions don't say so, but make sure the drain valve is closed as tightly as possible or you'll shower like me when you're done filling the tank. I would also recommend using enough teflon pipe sealant on the threads when adding threaded fittings to get 1/2" to 3/4" (which is the standard for laundry) or they will leak as well. The block is heavy. About 85 pounds filled with water, so make sure you're in a joist with at least one heavy-duty 3.5-inch diameter wood screw. Also follow the instructions to fill the unit with water, but if you are wall mounting it, fill it after mounting as it will be heavy after filling. Once plugged in, it does what it's supposed to with no fuss.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • The list will be long.
