I don't think there is a better solution at the time of writing this article. However, buyers should note that not all TVs are compatible with HDMI input. (But there is a pseudo workaround by buying additional hardware -) I've used it with the Atari ST so far. Plan to use it later with other classic cars. With ST, it works well in low and medium color resolution display. I tested an Atari RGB to SCART cable connected to a SCART input (V1) and an Atari RGB to VGA straight cable (V3). SCART looks a little cleaner than VGA, but both look pretty good. I had to test multiple displays to find the best choice. I understand that some monitors may not be able to display an image due to total incompatibility, or if the monitor is able to display an image - it can now work in all line multiplier modes. (Linear multiplier modes allow you to perceive a clearer picture.) When the unit is first turned on, it outputs a test pattern (which should work on all monitors, FYI). It's not until you select an input that you determine if your monitor is compatible and at what level. I had a very large, slightly older, high-end plasma display that I wanted to use as my primary display, but it wasn't compatible. But when I connected the VGA to the HDMI upscaler and placed it after the HDMI OSSC output - to the upscaler's HDMI input - then the upscaler's HDMI output - to my plasma's HDMI input - I was able to get a good one get picture.
