This monitor was a great purchase. Big but not gigantic, no dead pixels, nice color (at the right angle - more on that below), trivial setup, DVD playback looks good, text is crisp and the native 1680x1050 resolution seems just right . Hooray, now I can remotely control computers that display data on large displays without resorting to a magnifying glass program to read distant text. With all that extra monitor real estate, I might even start using Vista's sidebar. The biggest disadvantage: the brightness and color of the display change depending on the viewing angle. When I get up from my chair and look at the monitor, the white color changes to light blue and the display gets a little brighter. The display gets a little darker and a little redder as the side angle increases. While these color/brightness changes don't significantly affect the legibility of text from multiple angles, I feel they limit this monitor's suitability for graphics where color is critical, particularly in multi-monitor configurations and environments where multiple people are using the need to examine image. . on the same monitor from different angles. If a single user is working with a single monitor, color/brightness variations should not be an issue. Another potential downside for some users: while the display tilts back and forth, it can't be rotated between portrait and landscape on the included stand. With default brightness/contrast settings of 100/100, this monitor puts out a lot more light than my previous (smaller) monitor, which my eyes quickly complained about. For text editing and web browsing, I chose a brightness/contrast setting of 65/65 with a color temperature of 6500K, and to minimize the overall brightness of the monitor I use non-maximum windows against a dark desktop background. For DVD playback, I use the monitor's brighter sRGB color temperature. While others might complain about the lack of an included digital cable, I'd like to thank Viewsonic for bringing the price down. I think most people will find the analog display mode good enough.
